Piano Division. In its activities the Division is consistently implementing the general developing functions of the piano, since all the students of the Academy of Music are trained to play the instrument. The formation of the Division (before 1997 – the Division of General Piano) is inseparably linked with the pedagogic activities of famous Belarusian pianists G. Petrov, E. Tyrmand, E. Alterman, L. Besmertnaya and others. Presently, the Division, that comprises Professors of the Division B. Spector and B. Berger, Assistant Professor M. Akhverdova, is engaged, alongside with the training work, in multifaceted musical-propaganda and upbringing activities (scientific conferences, competitions, concerts), and also in methodology work.

Division of Concertmaster’s Skills. A considerable number of students of the Piano Department obtain a specialisation of a concertmaster. The traditions of mastering of artistic accompaniment were laid down by the founders of the Belarusian piano school G. Petrov and M. Berger (the first Head of the Division of Concertmaster’s Skills, 1966). From the mid-1950s the concertmaster’s class has been taught by the famous Belarusian composer E. Tyrmand, who managed to create a unique system of training concertmasters and is a founder of an original national school of concertmaster’s skills. The modern high level of professional training of concertmasters is ensured by Senior Teacher T. Dubrovskaiy (Head of the Division), Assistant Professors S. Byalkevich, S. Okolova, S. Os'kina, Honoured Artist of Belarus, Assistant Professor L. Tolkachova, Professor of the Division G. Korzhenevskaya and a number of teachers of the younger generation.

Before 1967 the theoretical musical training of the students was carried out by the Division of Musical Theory, History and Composition. The formation of the national musicology science and education is connected with the work of famous musicologists of their days Yu. Letetsky, M. Minenkova, M. Shifrin, S. Nisnevich, L. Moukharinskaya. They are all graduates of the Moscow and St. Petersburg Conservatoires in the class of world-famous researchers of music I. Sposobin, L. Mazel, K. Koushnaryov, B. Levik and others. From the moment of foundation in 1968 of independent Divisions of Musical Theory (Head – K. Stsepantsevich) and Musical History (Head – G. Glouschenko) the research and methodical activities in the sphere of musicology became much more animated. A notable event of musicology of the period was publication of “The History of Belarusian Soviet Music” (Minsk, 1971).

The Division of Belarusian Music marked in 2001 its tenth birthday. During this relatively short period of time the Division has become a real centre of Belarusian ethnomusicology. The Division is consistently developing the traditions that were laid down by one of the founders of the modern Belarusian ethnomusicology L. Moukharinskaya. The experience of older teachers of the Division – Doctor of Musicology, Professor I.
